Sept 10, 2015: Latitude and Longitude

We're almost to Friday! One more day until the weekend!

We started our read aloud book, Coraline, by Neil Gaiman.

It's also a movie, so we will get to watch that when we are finished reading! After we read the first chapter we did a visualizing activity.  Each group was assigned an important part of the chapter to draw.  This helped us review what happened in the chapter, and visualize it in our heads!

Following read aloud we practiced our sentence of the week rules.  To review, the rules are

  1. Always start a sentence with a capital letter.
  2. Always finish a sentence with punctuation.
Finally, we finished up by continuing our discussion of the 5 Themes of Geography.  We continued learning about location, the first theme.  Today we discussed latitude and longitude.  We learned that the equator and the prime meridian divide the earth into hemispheres, and are the zero degree lines of latitude and longitude.

Your homework tonight is to finish the latitude and longitude worksheet, linked here, that we started together in class.  Some of you also have current events due tomorrow! Make sure to send me your stuff tonight!

Sept 8, 2015: SOW and 5 Themes of Geography

Happy Tuesday! What a way to start the week! All this rain had most of us feeling a little tired this morning....but we still got a ton done in class.

We started out with DEAR time.  Remember, if you don't have a DEAR book, you can stop into the Hub and check one out!  After DEAR we started Sentence of the Week (SOW).  At the beginning of the week, I will post new sentences.  The sentences will demonstrate a rule of grammar and/or punctuation that we will focus on for the week.  The homework will then be to create three new sentences demonstrating the rule.

Here is a link to this weeks sentence of the week.  So create three new sentences tonight that begin with capital letters and end with punctuation!

In 1st and 2nd hour we then started our 5 Themes of Geography unit, where we learned that the fives themes are

  1. Location
  2. Region
  3. Place
  4. Movement
  5. Human-Environment Interaction
We focused on location and learned that it means, "Where is it?".  When geographers look at location they use cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West), and latitude and longitude.  We will spend more time talking about this tomorrow, and 5th and 6th hour we will start on this tomorrow!

Don't forget if you have current events this week to send me your template as soon as you can!

Sept 3, 2015 Picture Project Continued

We continued working on our picture project today!  Almost everyone got done in class, and they look awesome!

We also wrote letters to ourselves that will be opened back up at the end of the year. The letters contained all the thoughts we were having about the upcoming year.  For example, kids wrote about what they were nervous about for the year, what they were looking forward to, what kind of grades they wanted to get, etc.  At the end of the year we will redo the picture project and read the letters to see how much things have changed!

Both of these are due tomorrow, although most of you got them done in class! Just remember to share both of them with me! Have a great night, it's almost the weekend!

Welcome to sixth grade!

Welcome to 6th grade!  I promise I will do my best to make this class the best learning experience I can for you and as fun as possible.  When it comes to teaching I really strive to get the students as involved in planning their learning experience as I can.  If I can teach in a way that is based on how they want to learn I feel that the students are more engaged and take more ownership for their learning.  I respect their views and opinions and want that to come across when planning units.

Now some of you may be wondering what the deal is with this blog....

Obviously technology is a huge part of our everyday lives.  Blogs are rampant all over the Internet and it seems there are hundreds of blogs for almost any topic you can imagine.  It is really important for me to make it easy for students parents/guardians to be able to connect with my classroom.  On this blog throughout the year you will be able to find out what we are doing in class throughout a week, if there is homework/what it is, when tests are coming up, etc.  I will also post links to important forms, worksheets, and project instructions.

Now a little about myself....

My  name is Mrs. Challe and this is my second year teaching.  I have a Bachelor's degree from UWGB in Business Administration and received my teaching license from Concordia University through their Masters of Education program.  I live in Green Bay (Go Pack!).  I have a husband named Bryan, and we've been married since 2013...

This past summer I had a baby! Her name is Rose :)

We have a dog named Samson, who is super smart, but thinks he is Rose's mother....

And this is my dog George who lives at my parents house (he was too comfortable there to move!)

I promise not all of my posts will be this long!  Now that you know some more about me I cannot wait to get to know all of you and your families throughout this school year!
